Substance Use among Unaccompanied Refugee Minor Youth (URM)

Hosted on February 8th 2022, the training was delivered by Rosalind Rogers, PhD, LMHC. This webinar will cover key concepts related to substance dependency and cannabis use disorder among Unaccompanied Refuge Minor (URM) youth. It will identify the links between URM traumatic stress and substance/cannabis use, trauma-informed and culturally responsive integrated models of treatment and strategies to overcome challenges to care.

This workshop will also address marijuana use in states where recreational use is legalized. This webinar is aimed at URM service providers including social workers, caseworkers and other support service providers who are interested in learning about the effects and treatment of trauma and substance/cannabis use among URM. This webinar is applicable to staff providing direct client services as well as managers who support vulnerable minors with complex, multilayered, and immediate needs.

After watching this 75-minute training, you will be able to:

• Describe substance dependency and cannabis use disorder and the links to traumatic stress among URMs
• Identify strengths-based, trauma-informed, and culturally responsive integrated treatment models for trauma and co-occurring substance/cannabis use
• Name strategies to overcome challenges to substance use and URM care, including in states where recreational use is legalized
