Getting Started with Psychosocial Support Groups: Three Successful Models

Hosted on September 26, 2024, the training was delivered by Megan Rafferty, MA, LPC, LAC, Training Officer, Mental Health and Wellness, Switchboard; Jessica Dalpe, LMSW, Senior Technical Advisor, Safety & Wellness, International Rescue Committee (IRC); and, Malalai Safi, MPA, Senior Community Wellness Specialist, International Rescue Committee (IRC).

Many communities lack culturally informed mental health services tailored to newcomers. Even when such services exist, barriers like stigma, language access, transportation, and time constraints limit client access. Mainstream mental health services often prioritize those with severe symptoms and have long waitlists. Psychosocial groups at resettlement offices or community locations can offer valuable support while addressing these barriers. During this webinar, we will hear from experienced group facilitators and explore three different models of psychosocial support groups—looking at the challenges and successes of each.

By the end of this webinar, you will be able to:

Explain the essentials of initiating newcomer psychosocial support groups, including structuring, resourcing, and facilitating groups

Analyze three different models of psychosocial support groups, including their successes and challenges
