Service providers’ communication with refugees is often mediated through language interpretation. Most refugee clients are multilingual and speak one or more languages in addition to English. While their English proficiency varies, many require language interpretation to communicate effectively and comfortably with service providers, particularly when discussing personal or sensitive matters. Therefore, it is crucial to understand what interpretation involves, clients’ rights to interpretation, and how to effectively prepare for and facilitate interpreted conversations. This toolkit is a written guide to working effectively with interpreters in all spheres of newcomer services.
