Supporting Refugee Students with Interrupted or Limited Formal Education (SLIFE)

This course is designed for classroom teachers working with SLIFE and/or refugee youth, mentors, coaches, administrators, or teacher preparation program professors working with teachers of refugees. It will take, on average, 4-6 hours to move through each self-paced, asynchronous micro-course. There is no direct facilitation, but there are opportunities to reflect and share resources.   1. Considering Labels in Education: Supporting Refugee SLIFE: In this 4-hour short course, you will review and apply knowledge within your working and teaching context related to understanding SIFE/SLIFE designations (and other labels) for learners. It is available in Arabic, English, and Spanish.
  2. Knowing our Students: Supporting Refugee SLIFE: In this 4-hour short course, you will explore and develop tools to help you get to know each of the learners you are working with in all of their dimensions (cognitive, social, emotional, physical) and across their lived experiences. It is available in Arabic, English, and Spanish.

  3. Building Bridges to Learning: Supporting Refugee SLIFE: In this 4-hour short course, you will consider the prior learning and life experiences of your students and use a framework to help you connect those experiences with dominant academic and schooling expectations. It is available in Arabic, English, and Spanish.

  4. Social and Emotional Learning: Supporting Refugee SLIFE: In this 4-hour short course, you will explore the importance of incorporating social and emotional learning (SEL) into your classroom. It is available in Arabic, English, and Spanish.

  5. Academic Achievement: Supporting Refugee SLIFE: In this 5-6 hour short course, you will examine methods for supporting both the content and language learning of refugee SLIFE. It is available in Arabic, English, and Spanish.

  6. Program Design: Supporting Refugee SLIFE: In this 5-6 hour short course, you will explore programs that have been designed specifically for SLIFE. It is available in Arabic, English, and Spanish.
