When Grief Is Complex: A Trauma-Informed Response to Loss in Newcomer Communities
Roundtable Overview
In resettlement services, experiences of death and loss are often layered with the challenges of migration, displacement, family separation, and adapting to life in a new country. These intersecting experiences can make grief more complex for newcomer clients and leave both clients and service providers feeling overwhelmed, uncertain, and unsure of how best to respond. At the same time, service providers are often navigating their own emotional responses while supporting clients whose experiences and expressions of grief are shaped by unique cultural, spiritual, and historical contexts.
This webinar offers a deeper application of foundational knowledge on grief and loss for newcomer service providers and their managers. Participants will explore the connection between grief and trauma, examine common responses to loss, and consider how trauma-informed care can guide culturally responsive practices. Through practical examples and reflections, participants will gain strategies to practical insights to strengthen their confidence and effectiveness when supporting clients experiencing grief and loss.
